Florida Keys in October: Glorious Weather, Fantasy Fest, and Stone Crab Season

If you're deciding whether to book the Florida Keys in October, here's the short version: the weather is some of the best you'll find all year, Fantasy Fest fills Key West with costumes and energy, stone crab season opens right on schedule, and a private home in Marathon costs less than it will once winter's peak season arrives. This is a month with a lot going for it, and for most families it's the better trip — not the fallback one.

The Weather Alone Is a Reason to Book

October might be the best-kept weather secret in the Florida Keys. Daytime highs settle into the mid-80s, the Gulf water stays warm and swimmable all day, and the thick humidity of August finally breaks by the back half of the month — the air feels lighter, the evenings are more comfortable, and mornings on the water are close to perfect. An afternoon shower still rolls through some days, but it rarely lasts long or costs you more than an hour. In exchange, you get restaurant tables without a wait, quieter beaches, and snorkeling visibility that's actually improving as the summer algae clears from the reef.

Marathon in October feels like a town that belongs to the people who live there, which is exactly the version of the Keys most vacationers never get to see.

Two Signature Draws This Month

Fantasy Fest in Key West, a signature October event in the Florida Keys

Fantasy Fest, an Hour Away in Key West

Fantasy Fest runs October 16–25, 2026, with this year's theme, “Musical Icons and Iconic Musicals,” turning Duval Street into ten days of parades, live music, and elaborate costuming. It's genuinely one of the more remarkable things Florida does all year — and it's also an adults-oriented street festival, not a family event. The way most of our families handle it: stay in the quiet of Marathon, about an hour up the highway, and drive down for a single afternoon or evening to take in the parade energy and the people-watching, then head back to a private pool and your own beds instead of competing for a hotel room in the middle of Old Town. If you do make the trip down, the Key West Attractions Association's Vacation Pass can bundle savings on the museums and tours you'd want to see while you're there. You get the spectacle without needing to plan your whole trip around it.

Fresh stone crab claws, a Florida Keys favorite when stone crab season opens in October

Stone Crab Season Opens October 15

Florida's stone crab season opens on October 15 every year, and the Keys are one of the best places in the state to eat the first claws of the season. Local seafood houses in Marathon and along the Overseas Highway put fresh claws on the menu the same week the season opens — it's become an informal fall tradition for a lot of our returning families, and one of the easiest ways to turn a Tuesday dinner into something everyone still talks about at Thanksgiving.

Quality Time Without the Peak-Season Scramble

Casa Feliz sleeps up to 10 guests, which means an October trip isn't two hotel rooms and a shuttle to the pool — it's one house, one table, and everyone actually spending the trip together instead of texting “meet in the lobby at 9.” The private beach and pool are yours for the week, not shared with whoever else booked the resort that weekend, and with the shoulder-season rates, a full week in a private home is genuinely competitive with a couple of hotel rooms during the winter rush. For multi-generational groups especially, that's the difference between a vacation and a trip everyone remembers as the good kind of together.

Beyond the Festival: What There Is To Do From Marathon

You don't need Key West to fill an October week. Early in the month, Marathon hosts the Florida Keys Premier Swordfishing Experience (Oct 2–4), a hands-on offshore seminar with the Two Conchs fishing crew and swordfishing expert R.J. Boyle covering the techniques behind daytime swordfishing in 1,300 to 1,800 feet of water. It's a serious-angler event with limited space and advance registration required, so it's more of a nod for a fishing-minded parent or teenager than a drop-in family activity — but it's one more sign of how much is happening in Marathon itself this month.

On October 10, the 7 Mile Bridge Sunset Celebration turns the historic Old Seven Mile Bridge into an evening of local food, live music, and one of the best sunset views in the country, and unlike Fantasy Fest, it's built for exactly the kind of family crowd Casa Feliz hosts.

Beyond the calendar, the Dolphin Research Center and the Turtle Hospital, both right in Marathon, are two of the most consistently loved family stops in the Middle Keys. Sombrero Beach is close, uncrowded, and easy with younger kids; a sunset paddle out of Boot Key Harbor is a quieter way to spend an evening than fighting for a spot on Duval Street; and the Seven Mile Bridge is worth the drive-by at golden hour whether or not you catch it on festival night.

Are the Florida Keys in October the Right Month for Your Family? An Honest Look

October rewards flexibility more than any other month in the Keys. Afternoon showers mean it's smart to plan water activities for the morning and leave afternoons open. If Fantasy Fest is part of your plan, book Key West lodging or a guided day trip well ahead — that week fills fast even though Marathon itself stays easy to book.

Outside of festival week, this is one of the most relaxed stretches of the year in the Middle Keys: restaurants are unhurried, attractions aren't at capacity, and a private home like Casa Feliz costs meaningfully less than it will once winter's peak season arrives in December. The trade-off is real, but for most families it trades in the right direction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is October a good time to visit the Florida Keys with kids?

Yes. Crowds are lighter than in winter or spring break, the water is still warm for swimming, and Marathon's family attractions — the Dolphin Research Center and Turtle Hospital among them — are easy to visit without the lines that build up in peak season.

When is Fantasy Fest 2026 in Key West?

Fantasy Fest 2026 runs October 16 through October 25, with the theme “Musical Icons and Iconic Musicals.” It takes place in Key West, about an hour south of Marathon.

Is Fantasy Fest family-friendly?

Not primarily — it's an adults-oriented street festival known for costuming and nightlife. Many families base themselves in the quieter Middle Keys and visit Key West for a single day to see the parade and street energy rather than staying in Key West for the full ten days.

When does stone crab season start in the Florida Keys?

Florida's stone crab season opens October 15 every year and runs through May 1. Marathon seafood restaurants typically have fresh claws on the menu within days of the opener.

What's the weather like in the Florida Keys in October?

Expect daytime highs in the mid-80s, warm Gulf water, and easing humidity compared to summer. Afternoon showers are still common, especially early in the month, so it helps to plan outdoor activities for mornings.

Are there family discounts in the Florida Keys in October?

Deal programs in the Keys change from year to year, so it's worth checking current offers close to your travel dates rather than relying on older listings. If a Key West day trip is part of your plan, the Key West Attractions Association's Vacation Pass is worth a look for bundled savings on attractions there.
